An assisted vaginal birth is when your doctor uses a forceps or ventouse (vacuum cup) to help deliver your baby.
About 1 in 7 women in Ireland has an assisted birth.
Your doctor will only use these tools if they feel it is the safest way for you to give birth.
An assisted birth is sometimes called an instrumental delivery.
Indications for Operative Vaginal Delivery
Prolonged second stage of labor.
Suspicion of immediate or potential fetal compromise.
Shortening of the second stage of labor for maternal benefit (e.g., cardiac, neurologic, or lung disease).
Why you might need an assisted birth?
An assisted birth speeds up the delivery of your baby.
You might need an assisted birth if your baby is:
1.getting distressed or there is a concern about their heartbeat.
2.not moving out of your birth canal as expected.
3. in an awkward position.
Your doctor or midwife may also feel it's necessary if:
1.you are unable to push because of a medical condition.
2.you are getting exhausted.
3.your contractions have become less intense.
Vacuum-Assisted Vaginal Delivery
Vacuum-assisted delivery has risen in popularity largely due to a belief that it is easier to learn. It is generally less traumatic for the mother than forceps-assisted delivery. However, it still carries a risk of neonatal complications and should only be used by skilled providers. It is more likely to fail than forceps-assisted delivery. Use of vacuum under 34 weeks of gestation or in small fetuses is discouraged.

Specifications of KIWI vacuum extractor
Part 1. Pump
•Self-contained control pump, which can generate negative pressure by manual pressing, with color scale mark and release button.
•The maximum vacuum range is ≥600mmHg, and the vacuum accuracy is 10%.
•The leakage rate of negative pressure at atmospheric pressure shall not exceed 3.5mmHg/min.
Part 2. Composite pipeline
•It is composed of hollow soft silica gel pipeline and strong steel wire running through it, connecting the control pump and the suction cup.
•It is used to transmit negative pressure and traction at the same time, and the fracture force between the catheter and the suction cup is ≥10N.
•The outer wall of the pipeline is marked with 6/8/10cm signs, which are used to indicate the common positions of OA/ OT/OP respectively.
Part 3. Suction cup
•It consists of a mushroom-shaped hard plastic shell and a built-in sponge cushion.
•The inner diameter of the suction cup mouth is 50mm, the maximum outer diameter is 6 2 m m, the height is 20mm, and the allowable error is ≤ 2 mm.
•There is a groove on the back of the suction cup, which is used to place the composite pipe and indicate the rotation of the tire head.
